In the Business School at CU every single class involves doing a group project. For my Strategic Management class this semester we actually had a fun one. We competed against other groups in our class in this business simulation game, which we won handily largely because of how incredibly smart I am. At the end of the game we had to make a video telling the story of our experience. The only real requirement is that it's funny. We had a blast making it, so I thought I'd share it with anyone who still reads this blog. Enjoy.

Well here we are folks. Here I am anyway. It's been a long time since I've written regularly, almost a year. I've had some pretty wild experiences in that time, how about you all? The short update is that I'm back in school full time, I've got maybe two and a half semesters left to go and I can definitely see the light. I'm working at a bar/restaurant now, which is way more fun than my cafe job, which was more fun than my desk job. I must say I haven't been perusing the internet for funny and interesting things much these days. I've been working a lot, and climbing a little, and part of me feels that all that junk on the internet is simply that, junk. But I understand, and I remember what it was like to be stuck in front of a computer all day. You want to be stimulated, because your job or your schoolwork or perhaps your social life aren't quite getting the job done. Can we talk just briefly about the presidential race? How wonderful was that speech Obama gave at the convention? I gotta tell you folks, he's a quantum leap ahead of anyone we've seen in a long time. He is the first politician I've ever seen speak about love and hope instead of fear. That alone is enough to get my vote. It's about time somebody realized that we're all in this together. But I like what Bill Maher has been saying, isn't it time for someone to come out against war, totally against it? Not just to pick the smartest or most reasonable war but to actually acknowledge the fact that war is not a way to resolve conflicts, it is a way to create them. Anyhoo, I hope you're all doing wonderfully. And who knows, maybe there are some funny and interesting updates coming to you in the future. After all, I still knowwhatimdoin ;)

Passage of time

On occasion the passage of time reveals things to us that we may have otherwise considered impossible, or not been able to imagine at all. Such is the news I bring to you today. I am going home, back to Colorado. I'm leaving behind someone who has one of the biggest hearts and is one of the most beautiful people I have ever known. I can only say that her presence in my life has been so enriching to my heart and mind that I can never forget her, nor thank her enough. I can only hope that the future holds as much fulfillment and joy as we have shared together. I am deeply saddened to have to share this news with you. Please know that we part as friends and with mutual good will.

Well good morning. I know this is the moment that many of you have been waiting for. This is my first blog from St. Thomas, USVI, and this is the beginning of the rekindling of this blog's three months extinguished fire. To start things off we have a photo of myself sitting on the balcony of our hotel room near the airport the second night we were here. And the photo above is of the view from that same balcony.

The story is as follows. We arrived a week and a half ago on a balmy Wednesday evening in St. Thomas. We rented a car for one day, loaded our considerable baggage into it's trunk and proceeded to take several wrong turns on our way to the Best Western Carib Beach Hotel 200 ft. away. We were able to get a quick meal at their restaurant on the beach and then crashed out hard in our bed back in the room. The next several days were spent making phone calls trying to find a place to live and a long term car rental and staying at the other Best Western across the bay. The beach there was nice, but we were both hoping to find some relaxation and get settled. On Saturday afternoon we were able to get our permanent housing and long term car. So we showed up at the Regatta Point condo complex near Bolongo Bay on the south side of the island. Our place was pretty nasty. Ants and musty mold in every corner. We took a trip to a grocery store recommended to us by the girl at the car rental place and encountered an immediate and significant experience of life here on the island. The food was old and incredibly expensive - and we thought we were at the cheap grocery store. Jodie and I strolled down the aisles, our jaws agape, in a crowd of island locals amongst whom we were the only white people. She asked me if I wanted to get cereal (a favorite food of mine) and I shook my head no, I'd just passed a box of frosted flakes marked 12 dollars!! When Jodie spotted one particular young man cruising the store with a gun in his pocket, appearing not to be shopping but simply staring at people we decided our cart was full enough and promptly left. We have not returned.

Over the next couple days Jodie started her job and I cleaned the house, spraying for ants and scrubbing out cabinets. The kitchen is now in relatively usable shape and the bugs are at least out of sight. Jodie's job on the other hand is an interesting experience to say the least. There have been a few occasions on which we have experienced a degree of racism from the locals, not being served at a food vendor, being ignored or refused help when we've asked for things like directions, or even quiet disdain from a grocery store clerk. But these pale in comparison to the degree of scorn Jodie's co-workers seem to have for her and the other white hospital employees. And as one's relationship with one's co-workers is often the most important factor in having an enjoyable work experience, well I'm sure the situation speaks for itself.

Nonetheless, Jodie and I are incredibly happy to be here. The time we are able to spend together and at the beach more than makes up for any challenges we've faced. Yesterday we joined our three neighbors (also travel nurses) and one of the ER doctors for a trip over to Jost Van Dyke in the British VIs. The boat ride there, into the wind the whole way, was incredibly rough but it was well worth the trip. I've never seen a more perfect beach - fine white sand, clear bright blue water, beautiful palm trees and a perfect clear, sunny day. We brought a bunch of beer and a couple of bottles of booze and relaxed in the sun and in the calm water all day. Unfortunately we forgot to bring a camera with us, but one of the girls brought hers, so eventually I'll get a few pictures from that day.

Anyway, things are wonderful and we're all settled in now. Our neighbor two doors down has opened up his wireless internet signal to us so we have internet at home. Here are some photos of our place and of the view from our place. Pretty much every single day here is gorgeous. If you're jealous then you're reading this correctly. That's all for now. Well all kinds of things have happened around here recently, so I thought I'd fill you in. Some of you know of these developments in my life and perhaps some of you may not. But either way I just wanted to make some things clear, you know, answer some questions. As you may remember I got laid off from my job at the end of September. So that's why there were only three posts to this blog during all of October, I'm just not in front of the computer all day any more. Which, believe me, is actually quite nice. In fact, the entirety of the being laid off situation is pretty nice. Which brings us to the question of, well what are you going to do with yourself C Dizz? You're out of work, you haven't finished college, you don't even go rock climbing any more. So wtf on the barbie?!? And you're right to ask that question. Some people have suggested that I have lost my motivation in the past couple months. But those people haven't quite hit the nail on the head. You see, my motivation has simply shifted in another direction. First of all back in July I met this person who is the greatest person I've ever met. She happens to be passing through Boulder on her way from San Francisco to the Virgin Islands. So what I'm going to do, what we are going to do, is to move to the Virgin Islands together in January. This may seem outrageous or sudden to some people, and I assure you it is both. It is a rapid development to be sure. But the only thing that's outrageous about it is how much this person means to me and how amazing the relationship that we have built over the past four months is. I don't usually write posts about my personal life. But because these changes are so significant I wanted to share some of them with you. So, in short, my motivation has shifted, away from certain outdoor pursuits (because let's face it, I didn't really give two shits about my work), and towards this relationship and the direction we are taking it. And there you have it. The posts won't stop. I'll get back to giving you hilarious and intriguing updates. Thanks for reading. Mucho love.

Well we had a great time in San Francisco this weekend. This marked my first time to the city and I was amazed. The weather is perfect and the streets and buildings and views and people are gorgeous. Of course, I hardly left North Beach the whole time. But I was glad to be there.

On Saturday we participated in the North Beach Bar Run, which is an organized excuse to barhop and drink all day.

What is it that makes a truly amazing concert truly amazing? There are a number of factors that combine to create the fullness of a concert experience. There is the venue, which in the case of Red Rocks is generally a positive, especially when the weather is good, as was the case last night for the Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem show. Then we have the sound quality, which has a lot to do with the venue sometimes, but RR usually has pretty decent sound, being a natural amphitheater and all. The band's performance is a huge piece of the pie. Some bands have a natural stage presence and energy and, of course, talent that make them good live performers. In my opinion both bands last night had this vibe going; high energy producing high quality music. They seemed to be having fun. And then we have the crowd. In my experience the crowd is probably the single most important factor in creating an amazing concert. Generally a good crowd is compelled to be good by an excellent performance. So the responsibility for creating a good audience does lie partially with the musicians. However each concert tends to take on its own personality, influenced primarily by the people in the audience. Last night that personality was absolutely disappointing, if not downright unpleasant.

My friends and I arrived inside the venue and found a place to stand along the left edge of row 13 right as LCD took the stage. We enjoyed the first few songs of their set and then decided to try to move closer. Our vantage from row 13 was fine, in fact I enjoyed the perspective, and I only moved in order to find that central dance vibe that one hopes to encounter at a show like LCD. As we made our way down toward the front and center of the amphitheater bleachers it became obvious that people were not into the performance as much as we'd hoped. Some folks were sitting down and others were standing, watching the band play with a sort of mild, head-nodding, passive interest. We had hoped to find at least say, 30 people dancing and actually enjoying themselves. What we found instead was an entire crowd of people who literally yelled at us for trying to move closer. As I stepped down a row into some open space next to one particular man he immediately turned to me and told me to move away. He did not ask me, he told me, and in a very unpleasant manner. At this point I was getting a little frustrated with the attitude in the crowd, and I was frankly surprised at the lack of energy that was taking place right in front of the stage. I didn't know what to say. I suggested that he remain calm, that I wasn't trying to ruin the show for him, but that I was looking for a friend, which was true. He suggested that I look somewhere else. "How long have you been here?" he asked. "I just got here," I replied - meaning right to that spot, as I'd been at the show for over a half hour. "Well I've waiting here all day, so you need to move," he snapped. Well, I thought, that's odd, since the doors opened at 6 PM, that you would have been here all day. But let's say this fellow had been there all day, does that mean he is somehow entitled to enjoy the concert any more than the rest of us? I understand his position, he wanted his space and he didn't want someone stealing it. But it was more than that. He felt somehow entitled to this experience that he felt he had earned and that I had not. He was offended that I would try to share in this experience that he was more deserving of than I, since perhaps he lives or works closer to the venue than I do and was able to get there before me. This attitude was shocking to me, primarily because the entire crowd displayed it. But the important distinction is probably not that people had this or that bad attitude, it is that they did not have the most important one, which is one of community and respect, and mutual enjoyment. This is the attitude that makes a concert experience fulfilling and fun, and it was completely absent during last night's performance.

I have never before had such an unpleasant interaction with the crowd in general at a rock concert. I was surprised, slightly offended, and completely turned off. My friends and I chose to move higher in the venue rather than succumb to the conflict at hand. Up high in the bleachers at Red Rocks we had an amazing time together dancing to the music and taking in the view of the city. Arcade Fire played a really nice set, if somewhat short, and intoxicated as we were I'd say it was one of the most fun shows of the summer. However the crowd down low left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. I will avoid the temptation to make some sort of cultural generalization about the members of the audience last night. I'm not even sure exactly what it would be. But I can tell you that the lack of love was a stark contrast to my expectations, and a sore disappointment.

Happy Friday yo's. I'm so happy this week is coming to an end. Longest week of the year for yours truly. Anywho, today I'm listening to Patton Oswalt's new-ish comedy CD called Werewolves and Lollipops and let me tell you something, it is the finest comedy album ever made. Well ok, that's probably not true. But it is the best comedy album in the known universe, ever. Ok I'm exaggerating. You would totally laugh if you heard my tone of voice when I said that. I'm doing this voice, kind of like a 'haha I'm hyperbolizing the shit out of this, I'm the funniest person in the entire world' voice. So but I'm serious though, it's pretty good. Patton's brand of humor is great because he tells stories, he keeps people engaged, and he ad libs a bit too. He plays off himself, working his one liners in with the rest of his story, or tacking them on at the end. I dig it, it's hilarious and thoroughly entertaining.

Well I've been online all morning and everything I've found just seems stupid. I figured it would get to this point eventually. Everything except for this one music video. I was actually kind of surprised when I realized what was going on in this video. But I admit that it piqued my curiosity as well. Mostly I was wondering if anything else would happen or if the whole video would be just her doing what she's doing. But the more I watched and the more I let the song sort of permeate the whole experience (and I love this song, absolutely love it) the more I found it to be, as I say below, beautiful. I've always thought of this song as like floating on an open sea with the waves lifting you up and down, and there's a rhythm to her movement that really fits with my own experience of the song. So basically I ended up really enjoying it, not for the provocation, but for the fit, and for the joy on her face at the end, that's pretty cool.

This is a really provocative video for Brightblack Morning Light's song Everybody Daylight. I'm not sure if it's an official video or what. Watch the whole thing though, it's beautiful. (NSFW-ish)

Howdy folks, looks like the results from the latest poll are in. I extended it a week in the hopes of getting more votes, and it worked! I got one extra vote in an entire week. That's fucking pathetic. Anyway apparently three of you were hereditarily hot, while just one of you was sporting fresh dipped gear. Nicely done. Maybe I'll have to start addressing four faithful readers. Since I'm in a chatty mood this morning let's discuss the weekend. Friday night we did some comedy down in Denver. Bill Burr was as angry and New England-y as I had hoped, fantastic. Saturday night we paid a million dollars for bowling, and I won every game by like 50 points at least. And Sunday we saw Superbad. Here's a mini critique/review: Two thumbs way up the ass!!! The funniest quote from the movie is actually in the uncut trailer that I linked two a few days ago. Here it is: "The funny thing about my back is that it's located on my cock," precious.

Ok, so I just talked to Michaela, Hi Michaela :) And I shared with her this desire that I have for more interaction on and about this website. She, in turn, inspired me to write this post. You see, I love the idea that anyone would enjoy or get anything out of this page, but what I really would like to see is some dialog or interaction regarding the posts. There is a comment section under each post and if you happen to read a post or visit a link and you have some reaction to it, I - and the other readers I'm sure - would love to hear it, so leave a comment. So far I've gotten only positive feedback on this blog and I'm thrilled about that, thank you. However my main goal here is to encourage a conversation about these interesting things we find online and post here at KWID. So, this is a plea to your creative side. I know you have thoughts and feelings you'd like to share regarding anything and everything online. Let's hear them! Your input will improve this thing for me and for others reading. Ode to the Commode

No, I didn't write a song. But I did take a picture. I was thinking this morning that all three of you are probably really curious about how I spend my day at work. Obviously you get a flavor here and there, but perhaps I could divulge real experiences. For example, my favorite part of the day occurs here, in the third floor men's room. This special toilet is probably the best crapper I've ever had the pleasure of plopping poop into. It is secluded and quiet, the toilet is the perfect height from the floor, the walls are tile, and the light is appropriately dim. It's a mood toilet, really. This is my ode to this particular commode, where I spend time each day, pooping of course, while playing Golf on my cell phone.

The picture of Chuck really should be on the wall in there. But alas, it has found a home here on knowwhatimdoin (KWID). On a side note, KWID is totally pro quo. And on a side note of that side note, Tit, LOL.

Concert Update

As usual, there are some upcoming shows that would be really cool to see.

Tonight, as Nick pointed out, we're all missing Trampled by Turtles, which is obviously the most essential show of our time. So, basically we all suck.

This Monday at the Odgen is Silversun Pickups.

Tuesday night at Hi-Dive we have Blitzen Trapper. I'm probably going to this show. Anyone wanna join me?

On Wednesday, August 1 we have Modest Mouse at Red Rocks.
And the kicker is that Band of Horses is opening, who are seriously rad. Check out their page to download some mp3s if you don't have their stuff.

Then on Thursday it's a tough call between Toby Keith at Red Rocks and Kris Kristofferson at the Boulder Theater. Ok I'm joking. Well, only about Toby Keith, I would totally go see KK. But my point is that (nearly) every single day there is something worth seeing. Incredible. Ok let's continue:

There are a few other good Red Rocks shows coming up too, but the one I will definitely see is Arcade Fire with LCD Soundsystem on September 17. This will be amazing.

Mickey Avalon is back in town at the Bluebird on August 17.

And one of the shows I'm most excited about and will absolutely go to, Magnolia Electric Co. at the Bluebird on Tuesday August 28.

September 10th at the Ogden is Devendra Banhart.

All the way in November (the 5th) we'll have The New Pornographers at the Gothic down in Denver. These guys are really good and Neko Case is part of their band too. This is really close to being a must see show.

And to round things out, Brightblack Morning Light is apparently playing four shows in Colorado over the next two or three months. I would go see them all, two in Aspen at Belly Up, which is an awesome venue, and two at the Art Museum in Denver. The first show is September 28 in Denver, so mark your calendar.

**Update: BBML is only playing one date at the Art Museum, and it's October 26th for their Inaugural Gala, which is like 1000 bucks a plate. But I still have my fingers crossed for a show in Aspen, that'd be rad.
